Lori Rifkin is the principal attorney at Rifkin Law Office. Ms. Rifkin has extensive experience litigating civil rights cases as an attorney in the public and private sectors.
Prior to founding Rifkin Law Office, Ms. Rifkin worked as a Senior Trial Attorney for the Civil Rights Division of the United States Department of Justice (DOJ). At the DOJ, Ms. Rifkin specialized in matters involving jail and prison conditions (such as provision of medical and mental health treatment), police misconduct (such as discriminatory policing and the excessive use of force), and juvenile justice (such as the school-to-prison pipeline and due process for juveniles). She also served on the Civil Rights Division’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender & Intersex (LGBTI) Workgroup, advising the DOJ and Civil Rights Division on LGBTI issues.
Previously, Ms. Rifkin worked as a staff attorney at the American Civil Liberties Unions (ACLU) of Connecticut and Southern California, where she handled a broad range of civil rights matters, including the First Amendment rights of various citizen groups to protest; discrimination and harassment in schools; criminalization of homeless and mentally ill populations; individuals' medical right to privacy; students' First Amendment rights; and same-sex relationship recognition and marriage equality. As an associate at the San Francisco civil rights law firm Rosen, Bien & Galvan, LLP, Ms. Rifkin litigated state and federal cases, including complex federal class actions representing prisoners and parolees in the California prison system. Ms. Rifkin also worked at the San Francisco-based Legal Aid Society-Employment Law Center, where she focused on employment issues involving discrimination on the basis of sex, pregnancy, and gender identity.
In 2012, Ms. Rifkin was named one of the best lawyers under 40 by the National LGBT Bar Association. In 2010, Ms. Rifkin was a Public Justice Trial Lawyer of the Year Finalist.
